Product Summary Draft 2

As advancements in 3D printing progressively shapes the way businesses approach prototyping and production, the technology has become more affordable and accessible. The article “3D Printing in Manufacturing: Visualizing A New Mode Of Production”(Adam, 2017) mentioned that “3D printers aren’t just making an impact at the consumer level. Instead, they’re slowly changing the way manufacturers think about design, prototyping and even production”. The article also states that “3D printing has grown into a $6.063 billion industry and boasts a footprint in a wide span of industries”. The growth of revenue from 2016 to 2017 was at 17.4 percent worldwide, which shows how much the world is slowly embracing 3D printing.

FormLab is one such company to take the capabilities of 3D printing a step further with the recent release of the 3D printer Form 3. Form 3 is a stereo lithography 3D printer that makes use of a light source such as a laser or projector to cure liquid resin into harden plastic. The printer has a laser with an 85 microns spot size, but due to its constant line scanning process, the laser is able to move in much smaller increments and thus be able to deliver parts with 25-micron XY resolution. Having resolution up to 25 microns and the ability to vary thickness to as high as 300 microns, the printer provides an extra degree of accuracy and flexibility from the first model design to the finished product.  It adopts a wide range of configurations which allows the materials to hard or soft, heavily filled with secondary materials or has mechanical properties such as high heat deflection or impact resistance.  Moreover, the Form3 is only 15.9 by 14.8 by 20.9 inches, making it easy to place on a desk, table, or lap bench.

The machine can create prototypes at high speeds and at only a fraction of the cost. It is inherently more scalable, unlike many other printers which have to choose between batch size or printing quality, Form 3 is able to produce all these options in a single machine and offers the freedom of optimization for resolution, speed and throughput. It also adopts a wide range of formulations settings that is able to produce materials that can be hard or soft, heavily filled with secondary materials or have properties such as high heat deflection or impact resistance and the variety of materials that it can handle enables the creation of parts for multiple different applications. It is also considered inexpensive selling at a price of $3500 compared to the Envision Micro Plus HD that sells for $10000.

  1. Hi Jin Yang,

There is a few things I would like to point out in your draft. Firstly from your first sentence I feel that it is unnecessary and would make your the start of your summary less concise. Also I spotted that the summary of your product comes after your thesis rather than before it and I can't see how your thesis will be justified if I am unable to know the kinds of features it possesses. Maybe you can try to rearrange your order of the summary so the thesis will be able to comprehend to it. I hope my feedback will help you in making a better summary for submission!

    Cheers,
    Hafiz
